Innovation Director


As a founder of ION Design, Mario directs the strategic and conceptual direction of projects. A passionate designer with a strong drive to create elegant solutions from complex problems, he provides leadership across design disciplines and helps clients navigate the challenging waters of product development.

With over 25 years of experience designing products for a range of medical, scientific, and consumer markets, Mario has led design programs for industry leaders that include: Abbott, Aircast, Altec Lansing, AT&T, BD Medical, Castrol, Covidien, Disney, Edgewell Personal Care, Ethicon, French’s Food, GE Healthcare, Halyard Health (Kimberly-Clark), Hamilton Beach, Johnson & Johnson, Lysol, MoMA, NUK, OXO, Playtex, Ranir, Reckitt Benckiser, Respironics, Saab Avionics, Siemens Medical, Staples, TA Instruments, Teledyne-LeCroy, and many others.

The recipient of over 50 utility and design patents, Mario’s work has been recognized with some of the industry’s most prestigious design awards, including more than a dozen IDEA awards. His work has been showcased in a host of design and industry publications, and he serves as an expert witness for intellectual property related civil actions.

Mario holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from Rhode Island School of Design and a Master’s of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. Prior to co-founding ION Design with Steven Bellofatto in 1994, he worked for a number of New York City design consultancies, including HFID. Mario grew up in Switzerland and is fluent in German and proficient in Italian.
